Revolutionary socialism, especially in its Soviet-style, Marxist–Leninist guise, was revealed as a spent force, both because of the economic failings of central planning and because of the system’s association with state authoritarianism. However, democratic socialism has also been affected; some argue that it has been fatally compromised.
